Istanbul State Opera and Ballet (IDOB) paid tribute to Leyla Gencer, one of the world-renowned sopranos of the 20th century, on the stage of the Kadıköy Süreyya Opera House on the 15th anniversary of her death.
According to the IDOB press release, “The Marriage of Figaro” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, “The Magic Flute”, “La Forza del Destino” by Giuseppe Verdi, “Don Carlo”, “Ball under the Masks”, “Aida”, “I Vespri Siciliani”, ” “The Barber of Seville” by Gioachino Rossini, “Anna Bolena” by Gaetano Donizetti, “Norma” by Vincenzo Bellini, “Manon” by Jules Massenet, “Cavalleria Rusticana” by Pietro Mascagni, Camille Arias from Saint-Saens’ operas “Samson and Delilah” were interpreted.
At the concert accompanied by Fügen Yiğitgil with his piano, Esra Abacıoğlu Akcan, Perihan N. Artan, Aylin Ateş, Aslı Ayan, Jaklin Çarkçı, Evren Ekşi, Anna Sirel Y. Etyemez, Nesrin Gönüldağ, Gülbin Günay, Otilia İpek, Nazlı Deniz Sür hr , Hande Soner Ürben and Evren Işık Yasemin performed as soloists.
Leyla Gencer, who is known in Western countries as “La Diva Turca”, “La Gencer”, “La Regina”, has a great reputation in Milan, Rome, Naples, Venice, Vienna, Paris, San Francisco, Cologne, Buenos Aires, London, Rio de Janeiro, Bilbao and held many concerts in Chicago.
For years, the successful artist gave life to the characters of the unforgettable operas Lucia, Norma, Lady Macbeth, Queen Elizabeth, Floria Tosca, Lucretia, Madam Butterfly, Aida and Violetta.
